To commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising and to celebrate 100 years since the Proclamation of the Irish Republic next April, the Defence Forces today visited Kildimo NS. The ceremony was led by Officer Derek Dinen, who formally presented the school with the National Flag. Derek talked about the history of the flag, the protocol involved and explained why next year is such a special celebration for our country. Three of the girls in 5th then read out their 'Hopes for the Ireland of the Future' and after that, Josh in 6th and Maya in Junior Infants received the flag on behalf of the school. Thanks to Sophie in 5th for her lovely words of welcome, Saidhbh in 6th for reading out paragraph 4 of the Proclamation, all the 5th and 6th class children who played 'Ámhrán na bhFiann' on the tin whistle and everyone from 2nd-6th who produced lovely pieces of art to decorate the hall. Derek then took some questions from the children before we finished with a powerful rendition of our national anthem, sung beautifully by all the children from 2nd class upwards. A special mention also to our local councillor Emmett O'Brien who came along to share with us in this special ceremony.
